Cowboy’s 10-run rally sweeps Texas
The game may have looked bleak for the Cowboys after 6 innings, but the 7th inning was one to remember.
These two teams were evenly matched, as the polls had Oklahoma State ranked #7 and Texas ranked #6. With the Cowboys already claiming the series, they had the opportunity to put a chokehold on the Big 12 standings with a series sweep.
Texas wasn’t having any of that narrative though, as they were able to blast back to back to back homers in the second inning and have a commanding 5-0 lead through 2 innings.
That lead only grew bigger in the fifth inning when the Longhorns were able to score on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly, making the score 7-0 Longhorns. Ben Cohen, the staff photographer who attended that game, admitted to being discouraged throughout the start of the game.
“I was ready to pack my things and go,” Cohen said. “Texas is an amazing team, and they looked like they wanted blood after losing the last two games.”
The seventh inning started, and quickly the Longhorns were in a pinch. David Mendham singled, Nolan McLean was walked, and Marcus Brown was hit by a pitch. With no outs and the bases loaded, the question was if the Cowboys could claw themselves back into this game.
Caeden Trenkle drew a four-pitch walk, leading to the Cowboys getting a run back. Then, Roc Riggio was able to double off the right field wall to give the Pokes three more runs.
The score was now 7-4 with only one out.
The bases quickly became loaded again, with Zach Ehrhard getting hit by a pitch and Jake Thompson getting walked. The next man to bat was Griffin Doersching, one of the best hitters for the Pokes this season.
After going down 0-1 in the count, Doersching slammed one outside the park. 8-7 Cowboys.
The Pokes were able to get some insurance as well, as a single from Bruce Brown was able to bring home 2 more runs. The inning started with Texas up 7-0. It ended with the Cowboys up 10-7.
Josh Holiday talked about the character of his team a few weeks ago. It certainly showed on Sunday.
“These players are rocks. Nothing gets to them, they don’t let what the world says about them factor in.” Holiday said. “They are always up for a challenge, no matter how impossible it may seem.”
After this inning, the game slowed down, with no other runs coming in on either side. The Pokes got the win after what seemed to be an impossible uphill battle.
The Pokes next few games will be held at O’Brate Stadium against Southeast Missouri State. These games are on Friday at 6, Saturday at 6, and Sunday at 1.
The Cowboys are now riding high with a sweep over Texas and are in first place in the conference. Let’s see if they can finish the job.
